[personal profile] starrbeam did this and it sounded like a good idea to me, since I have some LJ/DW friends who I don't know some of the basics about.

Saw this one Gail Carringer's LJ and it sounded interesting.

What was the last sf/f/h book you finished reading?

The Masked Empire by Patrick Weekes

What was the last sf/f/h book you did not finish reading?

It's been awhile since I didn't finish a book. Best guess is whatever volume of the Spice & Wolf light novels that I got stuck on, back when I was still reviewing manga and stuff.

What was the last sf/f/h book you read that you liked but most people didn’t?

Uh ... Eclipse? Which lots of people obviously like, just not most of the people I associate with. I thought it was fun, though I think New Moon is the best books so far, because it has the least Edward and the most Jacob. Go Team Jacob.

What was the last sf/f/h book you read that you disliked?

Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin. I think a lot of sci-fi doesn't age well and this one, while a classic, just didn't do much for me.

How long do your 1-sitting reading sessions usually last?

Usually half an hour, because I typically do most of my reading at bedtime and that's about how long I can last before my eyes start dropping.

What are you currently reading?

To Marry an English Lord by Gail MacColl and Carol McD. Wallace.

Do you like it so far?

Yes, I love it. I didn't know much about this period of history (the so-called "Gilded Age" in the late 1800s, when American heiresses started marrying into the English aristocracy in droves) and I love learning all the stories.

How long ago did you buy the book you are currently reading?

My mother bought it for me for Christmas.

What was the last physical sf/f/h book you bought?

The Masked Empire, with a gift card I got for Christmas.

What is the sf/f/h sub-genre you like to read the most?

Definitely fantasy. I would like to read more sci-fi and horror but there's just SO MANY THINGS to read out there.

What is the sf/f/h sub-genre you dislike the most and why?

Probably sci-fi, just because it's the one I've had the least experience with when it comes to prose fiction, and I find it's easy for it to come across as a bit cold.

What is your favorite electronic reading device?

I do love my Kobo.

What was the last sf/f/h eBook you bought?

I honestly don't know. I've picked up a lot of free books recently and I think some of them were genre but yeah, without the physical book it's harder for me to remember each one before I've read it.

Do you read books exclusively in 1 format (physical/electronic)?

No, though I like physical books better.

Do you read eBooks exclusively on a single device?

Yes, I don't like reading from a lit screen if I can help it.

Imriel's surgery went smoothly. He's got a lovely stapled-up incision on his stomach and thus such henceforth be known as Frankendog. At least until they come out. He's definitely quite subdued tonight, and more than a little clingy (even by his standards!). But mostly annoyed that I'm not letting him eat and drink as much as he would like (stomach surgery and all).

Behold, Frankendog! )

Also, hurrah for having the vet be a family friend, the whole thing was done for just over $600 which is just amazing.

I'll be working from home tomorrow to keep an eye on him. I bought a no bite collar thing that is basically a plastic tube that immobilizes his neck. He doesn't like it, of course, but let knocking things over than a cone of shame and he certainly can't be trusted not to lick and possibly pull out the staples on his own.

Yesterday was Imriel's first birthday! In honour of it, I took the picture all Dane owners are contractually obligated to do at least once.

He's come a long way from the tiny beanie baby puppy I first met!

His neuter and gastropexy are scheduled for tomorrow. I'm not too concerned about it, though it is surgery and thus I'm beginning to get a touch of nerves. I'm sure it will be fine though.

Because the look back at past entries in January was interesting, I thought I would try doing it every month. So let's see what I said over the years around February 9th!

Well, that was quite interesting. Though there were a lot of negative entries to get through but February is probably my least favourite month. I did actually mention in an entry I didn't put here that I could understand why it is "suicide month" in university, which is why that's when Reading Week is.

Back when there was only one Reading Week. It would have been nice to have two, even if you never really did all that much reading.

Talking on the phone to Shannon today. Pertinent to this quote is the fact that she has an almost two-month old at home.

Me: I'd tell you I'm tired but you'd probably punch me through the phone.
Shannon: (singing to the tune of Kiss Me Thru The Phone) Punch you through the phone!

Things that are not helpful if you are trying to get going in the morning: discovering that the latest episode of TellTale's Game of Thrones was released.

OMG. Just ... OMG. This game is SO good.

This episode also had this amazing end credits song (as did the second episode of The Walking Dead Season Two). Spoilers for the events of episode 1.

After finishing up work last night, I got a migraine, yay. Who doesn't love spending 12 hours in bed? It's mostly gone but not completely, so I decided to just take the day off work to make sure it doesn't come back.

I've been making progress on my kinkmeme fills, which has been nice. The Blood of Dragons fills should be finished soon, which is exciting because I am looking forward to putting them together into one fic and seeing how much extra work needs to be done. I already realized I need to set up that it's happening alongside Adamant more, so I have a few notes about changes to make. And the two new fills finally have a start posted to them, so the prompter doesn't think I've forgotten about them.

I also have been working on The Right of Annulment a lot. Mainly writing the epilogue, because apparently this is how I roll some days when it comes to writing multi-parts. Meanwhile, chapter 1 is still not quite complete. I haven't decided if I will wait till I have the whole thing written before posting it, or if I will post as things are completed.

I also really need to work on some of my older stuff too, especially Varric's Last Tale since it really is almost all done ... except for a major portion of the next chapter to be posted.

I might try to do some of that this afternoon, since I feel like avoiding being in front of a computer for too long right now is probably a good plan.

I have a ringette tournament in Kingston this weekend, which should be fun. The tournament means a bit more to the rest of the team, since it was this tournament that led to the team's creation in the first place. But it's a big deal for me too, since we always went to the Kingston tournament when I was a kid. I have lots of great memories of going up and down Queen St, when we were old enough to be allowed to wander without parental supervision.

I'll be bringing my netbook and other devices with me, of course, so I may be around. We actually have a lot of time to kill on Saturday, since our first game isn't until 4, so I might even find time for some writing, though it depends on what else is going on. I'm sharing a room/ride with my aunt, so it should be a good time.

While I'm writing, I am also going to do another music on my iPod meme! Sort of!

So, this time I'm going to tell you the first 10 songs that played that ALSO have a 5-star rating. A bit self-serving because I am trying to get all iPod music rated, to make it easier to purge music if I need room for audiobooks and podcasts.

That was actually pretty damn representational of my musical tastes. Awesome.

I took today off work because I had a doctor's appointment in the morning. It was with an ankle specialist/surgeon, to determine if there was anything seriously wrong with my right ankle.

Backstory! I have always had lousy wrists/ankles. My ankles especially are stiff and crack a fair amount. My right ankle is the worst and back when I was working retail full-time, it got really painful, to the point where my last couple of months in Toronto were spent in the backroom with a chair beside me to kneel my right leg on. And I had a brace bought at the drugstore and lots of Advil Muscle & Joint. So after I moved back to Ottawa, I finally decided it was time to see a doctor about it. That ended in my referral.

Oh yeah, and that was THREE YEARS AGO!!!

Anyway, I had some x-rays done a few weeks ago and saw the guy today. And pretty much he doesn't think there is anything bad enough to justify any drastic action, though he could tell that I toe in from looking at the x-rays, since my bones are aligned in odd ways. Just not odd enough for surgery or anything like that.

He did prescribe me a better ankle brace, which I picked up afterwards. It's interesting, though it's going to take awhile to figure out how to adjust it so that it doesn't cause too much discomfort, while also giving me some support. I'm going to see what it is like wearing it all day and taking it off at night, to see if it's worth it or if I should just use it when I'm going to be standing/walking/otherwise vertical for long periods of time.

On the plus side, I am home now and have nothing pressing to do for the rest of the day. Which means I can finally catch up on fan fic writing and reading, hurrah!
i_paint_the_sky: (Dragon Age // Flemeth)
After a few weeks of spending my time on other endeavors, I've started back at my second Inquisition playthrough. And while I was playing it last, I started thinking of those choices in the games that I will categorically never be able to do. So I thought I would make a list of them.

And because I have made some tough choices, I decided to add the hardest thing I've ever done in a playthrough.

There will be spoilers for Inqusition but I'll put that section under a cut (at least they will be if you are reading this on LJ, that code doesn't seem to work on Dreamwidth).

There may be others I'm not thinking of right now. If there's something that stands out, let me know in the comments.

I always meant to do that meme where you list the top played songs on your MP3 player. But I never did (at least as far as I can remember) because not enough time had passed or whatever.

Well, today I am going to do it. Hurrah! With videos because then you can actually hear the songs and stuff.

That was fun! I may do the random 10 songs meme again sometime because who doesn't like music memes.

My parents had to put their dog down tonight. He was having dental issues that kept him from being able to eat kibble, and when they did blood work to see if surgury was even an option, all his numbers were pretty terrible.

He had a great, long life but it's still been a pretty devastating day.

And the Tiny captcha was "we bid you goodnight." Thanks, TinyPic.
i_paint_the_sky: (Dragon Age // Alistair)
I just wanted to a) use my snazzy new Alistair icon that I love and b) comment on how awesome it's been to have new DA-fandom friends who are also writers that I can talk fan fic with. Because, forget about whiskers on kittens, talking about writing is pretty much one of my favourite things!

That's all.
i_paint_the_sky: (The Vampire Diaries // Stefan)
So, I just got hit by a wave of nostaligia and so decided to go through my LJ/DW archives and pull out the first line of the entry closest to this date for every year I've been keeping this thing going. Because looking back is fun (hopefully ... we'll see if I dredge up anything terrible).

Wow, I've had an LJ since 2004! )

That was fun, I may have to do it again in a different month. A surprising number of those were actually posted on Jan 14. Of course, the further back I got, the more often I posted. I used to do it pretty much every day.
i_paint_the_sky: (Default)
Bah. I just got a new plot bunny that really interests me. I am going to blame [profile] erunamiryene for this, because I got the idea while reading the latest chapter of "A Mage & a (Former) Templar Walk Into an Inquisition ...", even if it really doesn't have a whole lot to do with what's going on in said chapter, beyond Hawke being there.

I definitely am not really going to do much with this one until I few things are finished. Beyond some outlining and a first sentence. Which I already have.

i_paint_the_sky: (Dragon Age // Dorian)
My latest kinkmeme fill! As mentioned in the master list of insanity, this one is getting a sequel.

Also, finally a DA:I fic focused on characters in that game. And yes, I know both Cassandra and Varric were in DA2 but ... psssh!

Right There (1712 words) by i_paint_the_sky
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Cassandra Pentaghast/Varric Tethras
Characters: Cassandra Pentaghast, Varric Tethras, Dorian Pavus, Josephine Montilyet
Additional Tags: Dragon Age Kink Meme

After Dorian makes a comment about Varric and Cassandra being together, they both find themselves thinking about the possibilities and noticing each other in a different light.

i_paint_the_sky: (Dragon Age // Cole)
I was talking to [personal profile] tersa about all the stuff I am working on, fan fic related, and thought it might be good to make a master post of it. If only to make my insanity obvious for everyone, including myself, because OMG how do I keep doing this to myself???

i_paint_the_sky: (The Vampire Diaries // Klaus & Caroline)
My parents and I went out to see Into the Woods tonight. They were a bit mixed about it but I thought it was awesome. Definitely a great adaptation, though there were a few things missing that I did miss.

Definitely going to be buying this one when it comes out on home release, so I can watch it again and again.
