Day 1 – Your favorite male character

i_paint_the_skyYep, I'm in a fan-ish mood, have some time to kill before going to work, and need to fill the void f there not being a new episode of The Vampire Diaries tonight. So, time for a new meme and hopefully it doesn't take me years to finish this one =P
I actually had to think about this one and decide if it was still true but even though his stuff this season hasn't been quite as awesome as other seasons, I still love Damon the best. He's just so fun to watch because he can be so unpredictable and self-destructive and cunning and yeah, I love it when he's on-screen.
Plus he's really, really hot. Interestingly enough, I never found Boone that hot while watching Lost so it definitely seems to be a Damon-thing (I also don't find Ian Somerhalder to be quite as hot out of character, which seems to confirm this idea ... though he's still very attractive and seems to be a pretty awesome person too).
The one tricky thing with being a Damon fan is avoiding the need to whitewash the terrible things he did, particularly during season 1. I wrote a fic about him and Caroline coming to terms with things a bit more than they did in the show (Team Me if anyone wants to check it out) and got a review on it that argued that Damon didn't rape Caroline. I didn't reply to it because I wasn't interested in getting into that argument with a complete stranger on the internet but yeah, he did. Things may have initially been consensual between them but that changed pretty fast.
As a Damon fan, it's a very problematic thing to deal with (which is why in general I'm glad they managed to make the sire bond as ... consensual as possible, since it was based on Elena's actual feelings, though there are still a lot of issues there). However, I think the thing that saves him in the end is the fact that we, the viewer, know that while he has done some terrible things, he's not necessarily a terrible person. Plus, I personally have always tried to judge vampires by a different standard than humans, not just in TVD but elsewhere, because they really are a whole different species, when it comes down to it.
Anyway, gotta go now so I shall stop rambling. Damon is awesome, go Damon!
