The food diary idea can help quite a bit, in that it can teach you exaclty how you're eating. It isn't even something you have to keep up forever. In January, I started one and kept it up for a few months, but then I quit. I haven't regained any weight back and so far, I've lost 30 or so pounds. I never managed to do that using any of those special diets or anything like that either.
