I watched Children of Earth Day 1-3 last night, day 4 and 5 today.
I am sad that I don't have a Torchwood icon at the moment...I tried to get an Owen/Tosh one at some point but didn't find any that I liked.
Oh god. That was wonderful and horrible all at the same time. I think that's when Torchwood has been at it's best...it reminded me SO very much of Small Worlds, which is my favourite episode of the series.
I can't believe they killed Ianto. With that, they have taken out the three most relatable characters in the show. Don't get me wrong, I love Jack, but there is always that bit of him that is inhuman, which has to be because he isn't human, not really. The Doctor has it too, for that matter, though I actually think Jack's might be better done all and all.
I did also realize that Jack/Ianto really doesn't interest me all that much. Their scenes were just like, oh, okay. Moving on. I'm not sure if this is just because it dominates fandom so much or if I'd feel this way regardless. Probably a mix of both.
And OMG did I miss Tosh and Owen. I knew I loved them but I don't think I realized quite how much until they weren't there anymore.
And Gwen well...she's still Gwen. I like her at moments but I just find so much about her is just overdone/overplayed (not by the actress, Eve Myles is excellent). I just don't like her being the "main" character (which I believe she is, even more than Jack, even though John Barrowman has top billing). I did however actually like the pregnancy stuff, that worked well (though I think Gwen saying she wouldn't have an abortion was again too heavy handed...I'd like to see it treated as less of a negative thing).
So I guess this brings me to the main question...how can they possibly do more? Unless Russell T Davies has just been lying to keep people from realizing it, it does seem like he will be producing more of the show, once he leaves Who. But how the HELL can they do it? Again, the three characters who were the easiest to relate with are dead and Jack's left. How could they possibly come back from that?
I don't know and quite really hope they don't try it. Let Children of Earth be the end because it was amazing and I think trying to somehow have things go back to even remotely resemble the way they were would really take away from the impact this series had.
Of course, IIRC Jack is going to be in the Who specials which might be able to change his attitude a bit. Still...I think it would be best to end on this high note and let Jack and Gwen go about their new lives in relative peace.
Oh and great love for a lot of the new secondary characters. They were rather brilliant.
