I've known about Renee Montoya's existence for a long time, since she first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, which I loved as a kid (and still love now, for that matter). But she didn't become a favourite until recently, when I read both 52 and Gotham Central and realized what an awesome character she is.
And she really is awesome. Watching her go through hell in Gotham Central as a police officer in a world with supervillains, followed by her metamorphosis into The Question was really great. And I loved her relationship with Batwoman. Plus, of course, she brings much needed diversity, since she is Hispanic and a lesbian.
Now if only they would actually have her appear in the New DCU. She definitely still exists, though it does sound like she isn't The Question anymore. But who knows, things can always change. Pretty sure no one is currently filling that particular superhero role.
Except for me ... (assuming I find a way to make wearing the mask bearable for longer than an hour or so).
