Day 7 – Your favourite scene

This is a tie because there are two scenes I just absolutely love and I cannot choose between them.

Oh, HERE BE SPOILERS!!!


There are a number of TVD scenes that I rewatch frequently on Youtube. Both of these moments are probably about tied for frequency.

Elena dies

I've mentioned before that I have some issues with season three as a whole. I find that its pacing was rushed and there weren't very many moments where you got to take in what was happening. Now, I discovered that this wasn't as much of an issue when I watched it again on DVD but I still think the execution could have been better.

And I think the same is ultimately true for the finale; however, this last scene where we keep flashing back from the accident that killed Elena's parents to the one that ultimately kills her is just so absolutely beautiful and perfect. And then there's the amazing moment when Rick collapses and Damon realizes why. And Rick's ghost visiting Jeremy and then he realizes why. And, of course, there's the big revelation that Damon's blood is in Elena's system, which was one of the show's greatest moments since Meredith using vampire blood to heal people was established so long before.

Finally, there is what this scene means for the episode as a whole: the old status quo is gone and a new one is coming to take its place. I've learned a lot as a writer by seeing how effective such a move has been, both here and in Battlestar Galactica with the New Caprica arc.

The music is also quite wonderful, though not quite as much as in the scene this one is tied with for my favourite ...


The hybrid massacre

Joseph Morgan has never been better than he is in this scene. You can just see all the million emotions that Klaus is feeling on his face and it's also one of the rare times when Klaus completely loses it and yells and is absolutely terrifying.

And then there's "O Holy Night" playing in the background which just completes the moment. Especially the "fall on your knees" line.

If the two scenes did not occur so far apart within the episode, I would include Carol Lockwood's death as well, especially since I usually watched videos like the one above which shows them both. But if I had to go with one or the other, the hybrids scene wins because it is just so well shot and delivered and even though I didn't care about the hybrids so much as characters, it is devastating to see them be killed off so mercilessly.
