So, I went to see The Host the other night. Apparently the movie is getting destroyed by critics.

But I quite enjoyed it.

Some vague spoilers below but nothing you wouldn't see coming (mainly who the love interests are).

Of course, it helps that I absolutely love the book. And I mean love, it currently has a spot on my favourite books shelf for a reason. I have never been more emotionally involved while reading a book ever.

The movie did not match it, not even close. But I still thought it was pretty decent. I really loved the aesthetic they went with for the Seekers, with them all wearing white and lots of sleek silver vehicles, and the whole plot with the main Seeker was probably the best written part of the movie, with a decent amount of subtlety that the rest of the movie could have used. But it still wasn't bad by any stretch of my imagination.

Also, William as Jed was absolutely perfect. He stole every scene he was in. Saoirse Ronan was also quite good at having a unique voice for both Wanderer and Mel and their relationship played out really well. My favourite part of the book is that the real love story is between them, not between Mel and Jared or Wanderer and Ian.

Really, my only main complaint is that I think they should have explored Wanderer's backstory more. I would have loved to see them try and visualize some of the other host species she had encountered because they sound amazing, definitely the most creative part of the book. But, alas, this did not happen and the first half of the book was pretty condensed and so Wanderer's personality really wasn't established as well as it should have been.

I also would have liked Doc to have a few more scenes but ultimately that one isn't quite as important an issue for me.

But I would still recommend watching it and I'm even considering whether it will be a DVD pick-up or not. It could have been better (I had hoped it would get closer to The Hunger Games as far as success of adaptation went) but yeah, I definitely enjoyed it and I even shed a tear or two.

It's definitely a heck of a lot better than a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes suggests. Our critic gave it 3 stars out of 5, so at least I know I'm not completely alone.
