So, I've been looking at the schedule for next year's classes again and have figured out some possibilities for both terms. So, here they are.

Seriously...there are at least three classes that looked interesting, two History and one English, in that one time slot. Blah.

Anyway, what I know I'm taking is in bold. Possibilities are not.

Fall

English 3911, Literary Genres, TTh 10-11:20 - I had really been hoping this class would be offered and since it is my major and all, it beat out two possible History classes in this spot (and there was something else vaguely interesting that I had to pass up too).

English 3492, Late Victorian Lit, MWF 11:30-12:20 - Another Dr Lapp class, the continuation of sorts of the Early Vic Lit class, the freewrites might kill me but I'll try to do a better job with them, plus I love Dr. Lapp so much. He's come to Tim's twice while I was there and it was very exciting.

English 3231, 16th Century Lit, W 1:30-4:20 - DR ROGERS IS BACK!!!! Yay! And it's a seminar class, which I've always wanted to try, plus it would get that last pre-18th century class that I need to graduate. So win all around...though it does mean my MWF afternoons are rather not available for other things.

History 3161, The Crusades, TTh 11:30-12:50 - I think I'll probably take this, because I need another History class for my minor and this one doesn't mean having to drop an English class. It's Dr Lundell, who I had for Renaissance Europe...he's okay, though the lectures were really long. But this wouldn't be the last thing in the day, so maybe that would make it better. I haven't decided for sure yet.

Religious Studies 2401, Introduction to Eastern Religions, TTh 11:30-12:50 - Obviously, it's between this and the previous History for that slot. I took intro to Western Religions and it was pretty interesting and I know even less about Eastern Religions. I'll probably take it if I decide against the History.

Intro to Japanese 1000 (full-year), MWF 10:30-11:20 - If this wasn't a full-year class, I would definitely be taking it, since it happens to fit perfectly into my schedule. However...it is a full-year. And that's a big commitment, especially for a language class. I've already seen that I didn't quite give Latin enough time and Japanese uses a different alphabet (or three @_@). And so I'm really not sure. It would be interesting to know, but still...and it would also mean I probably end up overloading. Which would be...interesting. So I'd say the chances of taking this are slim, but it's possible.

Of course, I don't think I realized before that the Religion class and the History were at the same time. And thus if I don't do Japanese, I'm still short a class for Fall. Bah.

Winter

Linguistics 3011, Language and Society (I think XD), MWF 3:30-4:20 - The third of three Lingusitics classes at Mt A. I must take it.

History 3731, Modern Japan, TTh 1-2:20 - I've been wanting to take some Asian history ever since I started here at Mt A (before getting into anime as well) and this is really the only chance I have, since the Modern Asia full-year conflicts with my genres class in Fall. So this is another must-take, and it will help finish off that minor.

English 3831, Aspects of Canadian Lit, TTh 2:30-3:50 - I was going to take this class 3rd year, but it conflicted with my French Revolution class, so I'll get it this year.

English 3411, Restoration and Augustan Lit, MWF 1:30-2:20 - This class was originally the one I was going to take for that pre-18th century lit credit, until I saw Dr Roger's seminar. So I'm not sure if I'll take it, though it's a strong possibility.

English 3663, Women's Lit in the 20th Century, TTh 11:30-12:50 - The other women's lit class, I'm not 100% about this, because I have another option in this time slot plus I'm not the biggest fan of modernism and post-modernism really. So I'm not sure about this one.

History 3611, Christianity in Rome, TTh 11:30-12:50 - Another contender for that last History class I need. It sounds a bit more interesting than the other one, but I'd have to not take women's lit, so not sure.

So basically...there are a few classes in both terms I am certain of, but both have some key holes. But I have another month before registration, so I'm sure I can figure it all out.

Well...if you do decide to take Japanese, me and Kit can always help you out if you need it. I mean..w.e both passed Intermediate.

Hmm...makes you wonder: why put in intermediate if there's no expert or higher level of the course? Only reason I can think of is because it doesn't even come close to a high level to begin with. I mean...you barely scrape informal japanese and you barely learn any real sentences.

But taking Intro would be good. You do learn the basics pretty good (although Oe-sensei can be a real hard-ass sometimes...so you gotta watch yourself)

I'm guessing it's the fact that it's NOT an advanced class. :p

Thats the thing though isn't it? I mean...why ISNT there an advanced class? Don't really make much sense. I mean...Oe could handle one more class.

As a rule, profs only teach three classes a year, and she's teaching three FULL YEAR courses. That's a pretty heavy load already.

and she tends to forget stuff in the classes she does teach. Good point...

Okay, thanks for the info, I figured you could give me a better idea of what it would be like. It will definitely be helpful to have as much knowledge as possible.

How much time out of class did you find you had to devote to the class?

Usually i did my homework the hour befor eclass started and studied for a tad bit longer when tests came up. But you might wanna give a tad more time than that though. The homework isn't really all that hard. Basically after you learn the two main alphabets, you just do sentences until doomsday, with the occasional kanji test near the end of the year. You will hafta do a paper though, but it'll be given around Con-time (possibly a week or so before break). But the start of the year is basically the 2 alphabets and the most basic of sentences.

Okay, well, that sounds workable at least. Thanks again ^_^

I remember devoting a lot of time to the class, but it was really fun. There's also Labs, though I'm not sure how many there would be [when I took it, which was when Mitaka/Tiff took it, we didn't have many labs because Prof.Oe didn't schedule many].

The bulk of the course is quizzes, once a week, so you're constantly studying, but it helps you memorize things more.

The labs in first year are no big. You can miss them and still get by. Besides...theyre only for 50 mins a week and you just go over the same stuff you did in class or use the pink book. and if pinky is used you can get out early because Oe tends to hire extremely cool MASSIEs to be TAs. Although...her choice for my Intermediate lab first term put me in an awkwyrd sitch...which i wont go into online.

Prof.Oe is pretty nice, and I liked Japanese more then Spanish [which was fun, but soooo much was covered]. Are you not going to do any 4th year courses? If you can squeeze one in, they're pretty fun, and primarily writing oriented [though I had a good experience with Prof.Bamford, so proceed cautiously :) Seminars can be scary at first glance.]. I remember Women's Lit being pretty fun, Dr.Shostak is nice.

Dr Shostak is gone, she had a bit of a breakdown last term and her contract was up. The 4th year classes all just aren't as interestesting as the 3rd year, since the 4000s are all "Special Topics in this".
