I have a soft spot for all things Anne Rice and the pinnacle of her acheivement came, for me, not in Lestat (though I adore him as well) but in a character who only really appears in one book: Claudia, the child vampire.
I am a sucker for a good tragedy, as most of you probably know. And Claudia's existence is probably one of the most tragic of all, as she grows up mentally in the body of a child (a body that is even younger in the books, though aging her for the movie works because Kirsten Dunst pulled off the roll as no younger child could have). And this tragedy is fascinating to watch and try and comprehend. And then, of course, there is her death, which is just such a waste since I don't blame her for taking action against Lestat (he's kind of a douche in Interview, and other books as well) and the only other crime she committed was to exist, which wasn't exactly of her doing.
So yes, Claudia is pure, undead tragedy at it's finest and yeah, there's a reason she's one of the best vampire characters of all time (though not the higest ranked on this list, as it turns out).
