We have reached the tie!

That's Nana 'Hachi' Komatsu from NANA and Ayumi Yamada from Honey and Clover. And I decided to make this one a tie because my reasons for loving them are pretty much the same: because I absolutely identify with their stories.
I was in love with NANA from the minute I read it in the first issue of Shojo Beat (which I still dearly miss!). And, as anyone who has read the manga knows, the first chapter is Hachi's backstory. I was just really drawn into her world and always relate more to her than to Nana Osaki (though interestingly, I sort of identify Shannon with her ... someday we will watch the series together and I'll see if she agrees).
With Honey and Clover, I actually had the opposite reaction: I watched the first episode of the anime and didn't really feel like continuing with it, since slice of life isn't normally my thing. But Shojo Beat came to the rescue again when it started serializing that manga and I gave the series another chance. And that's when I really met Ayumi and pretty much from her introduction, I was hooked.
Both of these characters can be very lovelorn and vulnerable and neither series shies away from showing their heartbreak. And it is really that emotional core that they provide for their respective series that draws me in and makes me cry with them and smile with them and laugh with them. They are just both wonderful characters who I hope eventually find where they belong.

18. Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune
19. Quatre Raberba Winner
20. Azula
