i_paint_the_skyWhile I obviously adore all the characters on this list, with this one we're now getting into the territory of serious, eternal love.
I'll admit it, I was a bit slow to get into Firefly. I never watched it when it aired (though I was interested in it ... just not enough to figure out when it was actually on!) and I didn't watch the DVDs until after the movie was released. And even when I did watch them, I was a bit meh on the show overall, until the episode "Our Mrs Reynolds," which was made of win. But even before I was a Firefly fan, I liked River. And as I watched more, I liked her more and more.
There's something about her brilliance and brokeness that just work for me on so many levels. She makes me want to laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. She also has just the most amazing way of looking at the world, even if it is a terrible way. When I RPed her at Glaxcin, I always let her do think or do whatever popped into my head first and, while it would be hard not to have a choice about that, there is also something liberating about it.
She also reminds me a lot of Alia, my favourite character from the Dune series. In fact, given that Joss Whedon has said that Dune is his favourite work of science fiction, I cannot imagine that this similarity is anything but intentional. I guess it's a character type I am drawn to, since I can even see some similarities with Helena from Orphan Black (which I didn't notice until I went to change the icon up). Killer instinct and intelligence and more than a little instability. It really is quite the potent mix.
Finally, she kicks ass and does it with such grace, as only a fighting ballerina can:
