Oops, missed a day. I was too busy writing fan fiction, you know how it is. Anyway, here's two to make up for it.

I thought long and hard about this once, since if you recall, Meredith is higher up on my favourite characters list. However, I think Loghain is a better villain overall, mainly because his motivation is a bit more interesting/less crazy.
I just find Loghain's entire history and personality fascinating. The reason The Stolen Throne is still my favourite of the Dragon Age books that I've read is because the characters are so wonderful and the depth it brought to Loghain's story really makes him compelling. And there's the fact that he honestly believes he's doing the right thing in Origins ... and unlike with Meredith or even Corypheus, sometimes you find yourself wondering if Loghain is, in fact, right, at least about some things.
I don't think the decision to leave Cailan to die was done lightly. And I suppose in the end, I'm not convinced that the battle at Ostagar could have been won.
Of course, his actions after that initial betrayal are a little more of the black and white variety, as he does everything he can to keep power from slipping through his fingers. But I suppose there isn't anyone else he really trusts to do a better job, not even Anora, and certainly not random upstart bastard (sorry Alistair).
Ultimately, his distrusting nature was his downfall, which makes him a great tragic character of the Macbeth variety. And I love Macbeth, so I also love Loghain.

Since Meredith didn't win best villain, I'll put her here so I can talk about it. And because my former favourite, Cullen, was well ... I suppose still technically an NPC but not quite the same in Inqusition.
I love the heck out of Meredith. I love that they build her for so long in DA2 before actually revealing her and that moment when she finally appears during the fight against the Qunari is ridiculously badass. I also love Meredith's backstory, because again like Loghain, it makes sense why she believes what she does. It sets up a terrible "path to hell is paved with good intentions" story.
She's another one of those characters who has just lost her way based on her past experience (not to mention red lyrium). Unfortunately, she was also in a position of power and took the whole of Kirkwall down with her. But unlike Loghain, I have the feeling that she would do it differently if given the chance (and the ability to be a reasonable person). There are times when she does actually seem to care about her charges ... when they aren't becoming blood mages left, right, and center!
Seriously, Kirkwall is the worst.
