Day 19: Your favourite ‘callsign’
May. 6th, 2011 10:01 amI will get to the BSG meme but first I want to ramble about Game of Thrones a bit. I am watching episode three right now and I definitely think you can feel the series hitting its stride now. I think it's been hard for them to have so many storylines all at the same time because it makes it hard to establish characters (with the book, the POV helps with that substantially). But I really feel the characters coming out now and the world feeling real.
My only real complaint about this series really isn't a complaint at all, just an observation/bit of disappointment. So far (though given what I just said, I think this may be changing) all the opinions I originally had from the book have not changed. As I said, this isn't necessarily a horrible thing since it means they have captured what I loved. But it also means they haven't brought anything new to the things I didn't like as much, in particular the characters.
Actually, this is the reason I lament a bit that Tamzin Merchant isn't Dany because what I've seen of her made me think she could get me to actually like Dany as a character. Now I will admit I've seen Tamzin work with much more extensive material than we've seen of Emilia Clarke so far and this episode did have some good stuff, so it could change. But there's a charm that was in The Tudors Katherine Howard that Dany so far does not have but could, IMO, have greatly benefited from. But it's still very early in her storyline so I haven't made any final judgements.
The one major exception to this whole thing oddly enough is Joffrey. I actually really have been enjoying his character so far, quite a bit. Somehow he just seems a bit more rounded here, probably because of scenes with Cersei that, IIRC, we don't see in the book.
Only other difference I've noticed is that I really don't like Robert and I don't remember disliking him before. But perhaps that was Ned's bias.
Oh and this episode is making me at least less negative towards Arya. Maisie Williams does bring quite a bit of charm to the character. Charm is a big thing for me.
Also, I really want to know how the geography of this world works and whether it is actually possible, when it comes to the summer/winter thing.
Anyway, on to Battlestar ...

May. 16th, 2010 11:50 pmSo, I've started watching season four of The Tudors. Only one episode in so far but I'm remembering all the reasons I love this show.
I've also discovered that I am so much more sympathetic to Katherine Howard than I used to be. I think I have The Boleyn Inheritance to blame for that because it really brought her to life for me. Of course, I'm watching Tamzin Merchant extra close because she's playing Dany in the Song of Ice and Fire adaptation...so far I think she's doing a very good job in the portrayal though really, all she has to do is take her clothes off for a lot of it.
I'm extra excited for the end of this season though because of the dream sequence that is going on. I've seen some of the pictures of Anne Boleyn with Elizabeth and it's just...really tragic, actually. And amazing too, because 400 years later these two women are still two of the most fascinating people in history, IMO. I just find it sad that they never really knew each other.
Great series. I will be interesting to see them finally have to make John Rhys Meyers look fat and unattractive (which they really should have done before this point but my eyes are not complaining). And the dream sequence (which features all 6 wives, though two of them were still alive when Henry died) will be awesome.
