Day 30 – Anything else you could possibly want to say

I wasn't sure what I was going to do for this last day of the meme, which is why it's taken so long to get here. But eventually I decided that some thoughts on the current season would be a good way to end things, even if it isn't exactly going to go out on the highest of notes.

So, I think at this point it is safe to say that this is probably going to be the weakest season of the show. I was willing to give it a few episodes to really find new ground with all the transitions from last year - characters entering college, main characters spinning off - but they just don't seem to have a direction. The Silas stuff, while awesome for showcasing the talents of Paul Welsey, was pretty much pointless. Which was a shame because I was re-watching season 4 recently and he was really damn creepy at parts of that. I still love the paranoia of never knowing who he would be at any given time.

Caroline is also really not getting enough to do. I don't mind the crush on Jesse but I just wish we could see more.

On more positive notes, this is the first season where I've actually been interested in Katherine. Her storyline is definitely the best thing going on right now and it actually seems to have a direction. Of course, said directions seems to be leading to her death, especially since we are expecting a major death for the 100th episode, which is the first one to air in January. But I think it would be really fitting for her to die then so I'm actually looking forward to it, if that happens.

Also, I'm going with the popular assumption that Joseph Morgan's return to Mystic Falls will also be that episode. As well as Sara Canning's because yeah, it would make sense to get as many character in there as possible.

Um, other good things. Matt finally gets a plot, which gives his actor whose name I don't remember a change in material. I also actually am interested in Bonnie's storyline again, for the first time since season 1. And I do enjoy the Elena/Damon in a relationship dynamic.

So I guess there is a lot of stuff with the characters going on that is right (minus Caroline). But the overall plot just, well, quite frankly it doesn't exist at the moment. The Augustine vampires stuff could potentially be an interesting diversion but I don't see it being main plot-worthy, at least not at this point. The stakes have just gone down so much and I don't see a way of raising them back up.

However I still have faith that the show can come back. HIMYM went through some rough years (looking at you, season 5) but this current season is absolutely fantastic. But I really don't feel like this season as a whole is that salvageable. I'm sort of hoping maybe they were trying to see if a more episodic approach would work or not. It definitely doesn't.

But the 100th episode will probably be amazing.
